The Stables is an affordable multi-family housing development in Aurora, CO that adopts a trauma-informed design approach. A report created by research team members at Shopworks Architecture captured the design-relevant information about two existing projects by the same developer - one that is a family oriented housing area and one that is senior oriented.

The findings of the report drove design decisions, resulting in a design which aims to make use of nested layers, sensory engagement, and identity anchors to create courtyard spaces that tie in well to the interiors of the buildings. It offers areas for play, smoking, gardening, peaceful reflection, and active exercise. De-channelization of Westerly Creek and addition of a new trail connection brings people closer to nature and offers a better connection to adjacent Expo Park.
